French agent handed 20-year sentence in Mali for state security breach

French operative sentenced to two decades in Mali over alleged state security violation

A French national, identified as Yann V., has been sentenced to 20 years in prison by a Malian court after being convicted of compromising the country’s national security. The verdict, delivered in Bamako, follows a closed-door trial held before the specialized anti-terrorism chamber of the Malian judiciary.

The defendant, who was serving under diplomatic cover within the French embassy in Bamako, was also handed a 20-year ban from entering Mali and ordered to pay a fine of €5,400. His detention began in August 2025 after an operation conducted by Mali’s State Security Service, which resulted in his arrest alongside several Malian military officers.

Espionage network and coup plot allegations

According to Malian authorities, the arrested officers—now discharged from the military—were allegedly involved in a clandestine network aimed at destabilizing the country’s transitional government and orchestrating a coup. While the case against the Malian officers remains pending, the French government has categorically denied any involvement in such activities.

Paris has maintained that Yann V. was engaged in legitimate security cooperation efforts with Mali, rejecting the accusations as baseless. The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated that France has never participated, directly or indirectly, in any plot against Malian institutions.

Diplomatic fallout and shifting alliances

The case has significantly strained relations between Bamako and Paris. In response to the arrest, France suspended its counterterrorism cooperation with Mali and expelled two Malian diplomats from its territory. The legal proceedings come at a time when Mali’s military leadership, which took power following the 2020 and 2021 coups, has progressively distanced itself from Western partners in favor of strengthening ties with Russia.

The worsening diplomatic climate underscores the growing divide between Mali and its former colonial power, as Bamako reorients its strategic partnerships toward alternative allies.
