Legal action launched against Ousmane Sonko over Touba remarks
A collective representing the descendants of Serigne Touba has filed a formal complaint against opposition leader Ousmane Sonko following his recent remarks alleging illicit financial flows into Touba. The group demands a thorough investigation to verify the claims, which they argue tarnish the sacred city’s reputation and dignity.
The association of Serigne Touba’s descendants has submitted a formal complaint against Ousmane Sonko at the Dakar High Court’s public prosecutor’s office. Registered under case number 12562, the complaint follows remarks attributed to the PASTEF leader during the inauguration of his party’s headquarters last weekend. Sonko reportedly stated that “dirty money entered the holy city of Touba,” sparking widespread controversy.
Through representatives Serigne Modou Maroun Niang and Serigne Mourtalla Bousso, the collective argues that these statements infringe upon Touba’s honor, reputation, and moral standing. They emphasize that the religious city, founded by Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba, is built on principles of integrity, faith, and justice. The complainants assert that Sonko’s remarks unjustly cast doubt over Touba’s spiritual and moral integrity, undermining the dignity of its residents.
The group has urged the prosecutor to launch a comprehensive inquiry to assess the validity of the allegations and their potential legal ramifications. They specifically request Sonko’s testimony to clarify his statements and provide any supporting evidence. The complainants insist that all necessary investigations be conducted and that legal action be pursued if warranted, including potential charges of defamation or spreading false information under Senegalese law.
