Libya launches large-scale border security operation near Chad border

In a bold move to tighten border controls, Libyan military officials have initiated a comprehensive sweep operation across southern regions, extending to the Chad border. The operation, announced by Colonel Ahmed Abu Qila, commander of desert patrols in the southern region, aims to curb irregular migration flows and enhance regional security.

Speaking to national media, Colonel Abu Qila outlined the scope of the operation, which covers vast territories starting from Sebha and Umm al-Aranib, passing through Qatrun, Dahaan Murzuq, and Tajarhi, before reaching the international boundary with Chad.

Strategic planning and security infrastructure

The operation is not limited to immediate security measures. Colonel Abu Qila emphasized the ongoing efforts to map out routes and develop a long-term strategy to secure the area. A key component of this plan involves the establishment of a dedicated security post in the designated “border zone 17,” a critical area identified for enhanced monitoring.

National commitment to border security

The Libyan military command has reiterated its full support for the Immigration Control Agency, acknowledging the urgent need to address irregular migration as a matter of national security. Colonel Abu Qila highlighted the pivotal role played by the agency’s vice-commander general in providing essential resources and equipment, which have significantly boosted operational efficiency and field effectiveness.

Future measures to strengthen border protection

Looking ahead, Libya plans to reinforce its border security framework through strategic partnerships and the acquisition of advanced surveillance technologies. These measures are expected to bolster the fight against human trafficking and transnational criminal networks operating across porous borders.
