Panafrican press: Sonko corrects Dièye over excessive religious reference

During a gathering in Khombole to launch party membership card sales, former minister Maimouna Dièye addressed supporters with a phrase that drew immediate attention. Speaking in front of a crowd, she stated, « I am honored to stand before you, especially under the presence of Seydina Ousmane Sonko Salalahou Aleyhi Wa Salam. »

This invocation, traditionally reserved for prophets in Islamic tradition, prompted a swift response from Ousmane Sonko, leader of the Pastef party. He took the stage to clarify that such religious honorifics should not be associated with his name.

Sonko clarifies expectations for public discourse

« Sometimes, the affection people show me can lead to misunderstandings, » Sonko told the assembled crowd. « My sister, Maimouna Dièye, when speaking earlier, included my name with those words. Ma téyé sama Guémign, » he added, using a Wolof expression meaning « it is not appropriate. »

He emphasized that the phrase Salalahou Aleyhi Wa Salam—often used to honor the Prophet Mohammed—belongs exclusively to religious figures. « Let us reserve this reverence for the Prophet. I have never reached that status, nor will I, » Sonko declared, as supporters voiced their approval.

This exchange took place during a national tour aimed at boosting party membership. Following the event in Khombole, Sonko is scheduled to visit Bargny, Bambey, and Sébikhotane to continue rallying supporters. The campaign underscores the party’s grassroots strategy ahead of future electoral challenges.
