Sahel sports festival kicks off in Ouagadougou

Burkina Faso is gearing up to host a major celebration of athletic talent and regional solidarity, as the capital prepares for the second edition of the Alliance of Sahel States Games (JAES) from September 7 to 16, 2026.

Nearly 540 participants, including competitors, trainers, and delegates from Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, are expected to converge on Ouagadougou. The official breakdown reveals a cohort of 376 competitors alongside 164 trainers and delegates, as announced during a media briefing at the Stade du 4-Août.

Eleven sporting disciplines on the roster

Competitors representing the three nations of the Confederation of Sahel States will go head-to-head across eleven different sports. The lineup features athletics, boxing, cycling, football, handball, judo, karate, kung-fu wushu, wrestling, taekwondo, and archery.

The events are scheduled to take place at various prominent venues throughout the capital. These include the Stade du 4-Août, the Palais des Sports de Ouaga 2000, the CNOSB martial arts hall, the National Medico-Sports Center, Boulevard Capitaine Isidore-Noël-Thomas-Sankara, and the Hamdalaye Hippodrome.

Enhanced security and hospitality protocols

Visiting delegations will arrive in Ouagadougou on September 5 and 6, with departures scheduled for September 17. The official launch of the tournament will take place during an opening ceremony on Tuesday, September 8, at 9:00 AM at the Palais des Sports de Ouaga 2000.

Local authorities have confirmed that rigorous inspections and protective measures are in place across all competition sites and lodging facilities. Specialized logistics are set up to ensure smooth transport and reception for all delegations, alongside heightened safety monitoring around the arenas.

Fostering unity through athletic competition

Held under the high patronage of Captain Ibrahim Traoré, the President of Faso, this second edition of the JAES is designed to transcend athletic rivalry. Organizers are leveraging the event to build stronger cultural bridges and foster a sense of shared community between the populations of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger.

Beyond the playing fields, the gathering is expected to provide a welcome boost to local commerce and tourism in Ouagadougou, while advancing the growth of sports programs both nationally and across the wider region.
